HERON

Install Docker

Docker is the only program HERON needs. This page installs it on macOS, Windows or Linux, checks that it works with two commands and fixes the problems people usually meet.

Pick your system below and follow only that part. It takes ten to twenty minutes, most of it waiting for the download.

In plain words

Docker runs programs in a container: a closed box that carries the program and everything it needs. HERON comes as such a box, called an image. You do not install HERON itself, you ask Docker to run the HERON image, and it behaves the same on a MacBook, a Windows laptop and a Linux server.

An everyday comparison: an image is a sealed lunchbox. Docker is the microwave that heats any lunchbox the same way. You do not need to know how the food was cooked.

When you need this page: before your first site. When you can skip it: if docker --version already prints a version in your terminal.

Open the terminal first

Install on macOS

  1. 1

    Check your chip

Apple menu → About This Mac. "Chip: Apple M1/M2/M3/M4…" means Apple silicon, "Processor: Intel" means Intel. Docker has a separate download for each.
  2. 2

    Download Docker Desktop

On docker.com, Docker Desktop → Download for Mac, the version for your chip. Docker Desktop supports the current macOS and the two before it, and needs at least 4 GB of memory.
  3. 3

    Install

Open the downloaded Docker.dmg and drag Docker into the Applications folder.
  4. 4

    Start it

Open Docker from Applications. Accept the terms: Docker does not start until you do. The first start takes a minute.
  5. 5

    Look for the whale

A small whale icon appears in the menu bar at the top. When it stops moving, Docker is running.
  6. 6

    Check

In the terminal run the two commands from the check section.

Install on Windows

  1. 1

    Check your Windows

Docker Desktop needs 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 with recent updates. Settings → System → About shows the version.
  2. 2

    Turn on WSL 2

In PowerShell as administrator run wsl --install, then restart the computer. After the restart, the Ubuntu window asks for a user name and a password: pick any, they are only for this Linux.
  3. 3

    Download Docker Desktop

On docker.com, Docker Desktop → Download for Windows. Run the installer and keep the option "Use WSL 2 instead of Hyper-V" ticked.
  4. 4

    Start it

Open Docker Desktop from the Start menu and accept the terms. Wait until it says Engine running.
  5. 5

    Connect it to Ubuntu

Docker Desktop → Settings → Resources → WSL integration → turn on Ubuntu → Apply.
  6. 6

    Check

Open the Ubuntu app and run the commands from the check section. All HERON commands are run in Ubuntu, not in PowerShell.

Install on Linux

  1. Choose the way. On a computer or a fresh server the quickest way is Docker's install script. For a company server, follow the guide for your distribution on docs.docker.com (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and others are supported).
  2. Run the install script. It detects your distribution and installs Docker Engine. Command below.
  3. Use Docker without sudo. Add yourself to the docker group, then log out and back in. Command below. On a virtual machine you may need a restart.
  4. Check. Run the commands from the check section.

Install Docker Engine with the official script:

curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh && sudo sh get-docker.sh

Let your user run Docker without sudo:

sudo groupadd -f docker && sudo usermod -aG docker $USER && newgrp docker

The docker group gives the same power as an administrator. It is fine on your own computer and on a server that only you use.

Check that Docker works

Two commands. Copy them into the terminal one at a time.

docker --version

You see Docker version followed by a number. The number does not matter, the answer does.

docker run --rm hello-world

Docker downloads a tiny test image and prints "Hello from Docker!" with a few lines of explanation. --rm removes the test box afterwards, so nothing is left behind. If you see that greeting, everything is ready.

Now run HERON once

The same way, Docker runs HERON. This command downloads the stable HERON image and prints its version:

docker run --rm ghcr.io/fmstm/heron:prod --version

The first time it downloads the image, which takes a minute. After that it starts instantly. To create your first site and set up the short heron command, go to Get started.

Common problems

Questions

Is Docker free?

Docker Desktop is free for personal use, education, open-source projects and small companies. Large companies need a paid Docker subscription. Docker Engine on Linux is free for everyone.

Can I use HERON without Docker?

Yes, with Python 3.12 or newer: pip install git+https://github.com/FMSTM/HERON.git@prod. See other ways to run HERON.

Will Docker change anything on my computer?

It installs one program and keeps its images in its own storage. HERON only sees the folder you run it in. Uninstalling Docker removes everything it downloaded.
